Patrick Thomas Sweeney was born on 28th October 1864 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, son of Bridget Sweeney, formerly McLoughlin, and her husband James Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. Patrick's birth is the family's first sighting in Scotland - until 1861 they had been living at Castleconor in County Sligo, Ireland.

The 1871 census finds Patrick living with his parents and siblings at Sorbie. By 1881 he had left home and was working as an agricultural labourer at Meikle Clutag Farm in the neighbouring parish of Kirkinner.

The 1891 census finds Patrick (listed under his middle name) and his brother Peter boarding with their older sister Mary and her family in Glasgow. At this time he was working as a carter. In 1893 Patrick's father James died at Patrick's home at 26 Nuneaton Street in Glasgow, and Patrick was the informant for his father's death.

By 1896 Patrick had returned to Wigtownshire. He was married in Wigtown itself on 29th October 1896 to Elizabeth Pollock. They had at least two children. They named their daughter Catherine Diamond Sweeney, presumably after Patrick's paternal grandmother Catherine Diamond. By 1901 they were living at Rerrick in Kirkcudbrightshire. Patrick has yet to be traced after 1901.
