Bridget McLoughlin was born in about 1840 in Ireland. Her first confirmed sighting is on 30th January 1857 when she was married at Castleconor in County Sligo to an agricultural labourer named James Sweeney. At the time of their marriage they were both living in the townland of Emlymoran in Castleconor. Bridget and James had four children baptised at Castleconor between 1857 and 1861, although two of them (both daughters named Catherine) appear to have died young.
Some time between 1861 and 1864 the family left Ireland and moved to Sorbie in Wigtownshire, Scotland, where James's brother Michael had moved a few years earlier. At Sorbie they went on to have another six children. The 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses each find Bridget and James living with their children in Sorbie. In 1871 they were described as living in a one-roomed home. By 1891 they had some of their grandchildren living with them.
In 1893 James died in Glasgow at their son Patrick's home. He was probably in his early sixties, and they had been married for 36 years.
The 1901 census finds Bridget back in Sorbie, visiting a Janet McCulloch.
By 1928 Bridget was living at Bishopbriggs in Lanarkshire. She died on 10th January 1928 in Glasgow. She was probably at least 88 judging by the ages she had quoted in the censuses. Her son Peter was the informant for her death and he was clearly unsure of her age - her death certificate records her age as "about 94". She had been a widow for 34 years.
