John Sweeney was born in 1876 at Sorbie in Wigtownshire, son of Bridget Sweeney, formerly McLoughlin, and her husband James Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. John appears in the 1881 census living at 14 High Street in Sorbie with his parents and siblings; he appears to have been the youngest of ten children. The 1891 census finds John still living with his parents at Wigtown Road in Sorbie.

By 1901 John had left home and was living at Chapel Hill in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire with his older brother Patrick and Patrick's family. By this time John was working as an agricultural labourer.

John has yet to be traced after 1901.
