Mary Sweeney was baptised on 20th June 1858 at Castleconor in County Sligo, Ireland, daughter of Bridget Sweeney, formerly McLoughlin, and her husband James Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. Some time between 1861 and 1864, when Mary was no more than six years old, the family left Ireland and moved to south-west Scotland, settling at Sorbie in Wigtownshire. Mary was the second of ten children, but appears to have been the oldest to survive infancy.

Mary appears in the 1871 census living with her parents and siblings at Wigtown Road in Sorbie village, where the family lived in a one roomed house. By 1881 Mary had left home and was working as a domestic servant at nearby Sorbie Farm.

In 1888 Mary married William McLellan, a carter from Girvan in Ayrshire. They married at Sorbie, but then moved to Glasgow. The 1891 census finds Mary and William and a baby son James living in the Govan area, along with two of Mary's brothers. Mary's father James died in Glasgow n 1893. By 1901 Mary's family was living on the opposite side of the city in the Camlachie area, and there were four more children. Mary does not appear to have been at home on census night.

Mary's mother died in 1928 in Glasgow. Mary lived to be 78 years old. She died on 22nd November 1936 at 4 Violet Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire. William had predeceased her. Mary's son James was the informant for her death.
