Facts and Events
He arrived in the U.S. on the ship Arabic on 25 April 1908. He was 21, and his occupation is given as “barman.” He can read and write. He is a British subject, born in Ballinahown, Ireland, last having resided in Dublin. His nearest relative or friend in the country whence he came is given as Thomas McEnery, Ballinahown, Newcastle West, Limerick. Although identified as “friend” this is obviously his father. He was going to join his brother William at 69 Madison St., NY. He is described as 5” 10”, of fresh complexion, fair hair and blue eyes. At the time of the 1910 census, he and William were living in a boardinghouse at 69 Madison that was presumably run by Michael and Catherine Enright (they are the only family listed, while there are sixteen boarders).S1 He would later marry their daughter Cecelia, who was fourteen at the time. At the time of his declaration of intention, filed 6 January 1919, he was a salesman, living with his wife Cecilia at 549 East 148th St, NY, in the house of her parents. He was described as of fair complexion, 5”10”, 200 lbs., with brown hair and gray eyes. He declares that he was born in Co. Limerick, emigrated from Liverpool aboard the Arabic, and that his last foreign residence was Dublin. He arrived at the port of New York on 26 April 1908. He became a citizen on 7 October 1921, certificate #1583861. In his petition for naturalization, dated 2 May 1921, he states that he declared his intention to become a citizen on 6 January 1919, in the Supreme Court of Bronx County. At the time of the 1930 census they were living on Courtlandt Ave. in the Bronx. At the time of his death he was living at 413 E. 155th St. His funeral was from the Joseph F. Panzer Funeral Home, 764 Melrose Avenue, and he was buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Westchester Co., NY. His death certificate gives his usual occupation as foreman for the Parks Department.
