Family members have confirmed that the same Orrin (or Orren) Arnold married first Mariah Taylor and then Mary Vickery.

One cause of confusion is that the Orrin Arnold enumerated in the 1880 US census at Custer MI, living with his son Frank Arnold who was the eldest son of Mariah Taylor, is recorded as born in New York and his parents in Canada, but elsewhere Orrin is recorded as born in Canada and his parents in New York (probably the enumerator reversed the birth places). Orrin's brother John Arnold and his family were also enumerated at Custer MI in the 1880 census. Meanwhile the Orrin Arnold who married Mary Vickery was enumerated in both the 1871 and 1881 Canada census at Chatham ON. It is likely that the same Orrin Arnold was visiting his first son (and his brother) in 1880 but had returned to Canada by 1881.

Another cause of confusion is that Orrin Baldwin Arnold enlisted in the US Army in October 1862 at Hazelton MI, across the state from where Orrin and Mariah (Taylor) Arnold were living in 1860. Meanwhile Mariah Taylor is known to have died at Lamont MI in 1863, near where her father and step-mother were living. Some accounts of Orrin's war service have him discharged in February 1863 and returning to Emmons or Lamont (on opposite sides of the Grand River) soon after.

  3.   The following is excerpted from information provided by a descendant of Arnold:

"Orren Baldwin was born in Upper Canada (Ontario) lennox and addington county in 1834 and married Mariah Taylor first and had 4 children. In 1862 Orren B lived on a farm near Hazleton (called New Lathrop now) The 6th Mich cavalry had recruiters in each county. Orrens county was company D/all black horses as each company tried to have same colors in their companies. O.B. was released from hospital in early 1863 in Washington DC due to the illness called (consumption) now known as TB. Mariah died shortly after the last daughter was born. The 4 children were handed out for adoption and Orren B kept in contact with oldest son all his life. O.B. moved back to Ontario and remarried Mary Vickery. In the late 1890's they homesteaded in the North West Territories just north of Edmonton Alberta. Orren B and Mary are buried together in Edmonton."
