Biography

ORLOW HOPKINS was born on Feb 26 1840 in Savannah, Wayne Co., NY. He died on Feb 24 1928 in Calhoun Co., MI. Enlisted in Co. A, Halls Independent Sharpshooters, September 13, 1864 at Coldwater, MI at age 24. On March 15, 1865 he was transfered to Co. B, 1st Michigan Sharpshooters. He was in the seige of Petersburg and the final day's battle. After Lee's surrender the regiment went to Alexandria and on to Washington, DC and participated in the Grand Review. He was discharged at Detroit,MI August 14, 1865. 5 ft. 10 in. Excused by the Surgeon. Near Petersburgh, VA about April 20, 1864 contracted a rupture caused by being struct in the right side while removing a pole fence. Worked in a stove factory in either Burr Oak or Bronson. In 1885 he and his family moved to Northern Michigan. The "Snyder Reunion Records" list a Mr & Mrs O. Hopkins of Athens as attending the 1915 and 1916 Snyder family reunion. Application for Army Pension in 1888 was made in Grand Traverse Co., MI (lived at Kingsley, MI); a 1991 application showed him a resident of Grand Rapids, MI; a 1910 application showed his address as Athens, MIHe was married to SARAH M. TRIP on Mar 10 1867 in Bronson, MI. 11. SARAH M. TRIP was born in 1846 in Bronson, MI. She died ?. Children were:

5 i. FLORA MAUDE HOPKINS. ii. LUCINA BELL HOPKINS was born on May 31 1870. Sister to Grandmother Flora M. Parents left the Bronson, MI area and moved to "Northern Michigan".
