Facts and Events
Family moved to Chester Township, Eaton County, Michigan in the mid 1850's. Lived next door to son Alonson. Seth also probably came with them to Michigan. May have been born in Onondaga County, NY [Mildred Hanson]. A Noble K. Gunn is listed in 1820 Onondaga County census (p 127). [Could be Noble Jr.'s father, though there is no evidence his middle name was Kind] Matt Lipsey claims Noble King Gunn was living in Galesville, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, in 1870. The family was back in Chester (Eaton County, MI) by 1872 when Lucy Ann died. (Daughter of Alonson) Matt believes the two Gunn lines (Noble and Comfort) were well-acquainted with one another. "The two families obviously traveled with one another across New York State--Comfort was married to Sally Wheeler in Camillus, Onondaga, NY--Noble evidently lived for a time in Marcellus, Onondaga, NY. Both families were early settlers of Ashtabula County, Ohio. As well, both lines ended up living across town from one another in Vermontville, Eaton, Michigan." Eaton County Republican, 30 April 1859, Vol. 5, #18, p. 3: "Two men are now in our County Jail, charged with passing counterfeit money. C. H. Sadler of Genesee Co., was arrested at Olivet some time since; B. Gunn, of Ingham Co., was arrested on Saturday last, and after an examination before Justice Robinson, was committed in default of $300 bonds." Eaton County Republican, 6 April 1860, Vol. 6, #14, p.2: "The People vs Burrel G. Gunn, Information for passing counterfeit money ion Chester in January 1859: "Noble K. Gunn was the complaining witness who received the money. The respondent was recognized to appear and informed against mainly on the testimony of this Complaining witness. After the cause had been in Court several terms, made considerable cost for the People and was ready for trial at this term, with witnesses in attendance, Noble K. Gunn informed the Prosecuting Attorney that he had forgotten in his complaint and testimony before the magistrate to state a very material point, viz.: that Burrel G. Gunn when he gave him the counterfeit money, gave him to understand that it might not be good, as he had before made several ineffectual attempts to get rid of it, and that he (Noble K.) must take it at his own risk. This information, of course, made it necessary for the Prosecuting Attorney to enter a nolle prosegui. The Court ordered the complaining witness to pay the People's costs and in default thereof that an execution issue for their collection." Noble is among a list of names of the white male inhabitants in the county of Ashtabula, of the age of twenty one years and upwards, taken agreeably to law A.D. 1827 Source: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohashtab/1827AshtabulaTwpCensus.htm 1830 Census, living in Lenox, Ashtabula, Ohio Is Lucy Ann Gunn (who marries Aaron Bovee) the daughter of Noble King Gunn? This census suggests this might be so. 1840 Census, living in Geauga County, OH, Auburn Township, pg 143. 1850 Census: 1860 Census: The 1870 census shows Noble and Esther in Gale, Trempealeau, Wisconsin. They go to care for the orphaned children of son Alanson, who died in the civil war. 1870 Census: Note: Brother William Orrin Gunn dies in Wisconsin in 1870. |
