Facts and Events
[edit] BiographyThe birth of Nicholas Cady, called in the record the 7th son of William and Sarah Cady, was recorded as Nov. 27, 1725 at Voluntown, Conn., together with four additional sons of his parents. Nicholas was bp. Jan. 9, 1725/6 at the Griswold Congregational Church in Preston, Conn., Voluntown's west adjacent town, as were three of Nicholas' brothers, each on separate dates. The 1764 will of Nicholas Cady's first father-in-law, Dea. Ebenezer Wright of Rocky Hill, does not include as legatees any children of his deceased dau. Sarah (Wright) Cady. However, it is believed two additional children were born by Sarah, sons William and John, who are named in their father's will. Nicholas Cady m. 2) by mid-1758, Sarah Boardman, dau. of Nathaniel Boardman, Jr. and Ruth Parker, b. Oct. 20, 1739 at Wethersfield. Contrary to the 1886 "Churchill Family In America," which claims they had no children, Nicholas and 2nd wife Sarah Boardman had at least son Josiah, who is named in Nicholas Cady's will and probate record. Nicholas Cady has no known gravestone, but is assumed to have been interred at Rocky Hill's center cemetery. The wid. Sarah (Boardman) Cady m. 2) as his 2nd wife, her 2nd cousin Dea. Jesse Churchill of Wethersfield's Newington Parish, by whom she had three additional children. Nicholas d. testate but insolvent at Wethersfield, Conn. between Mar. 21, 1760 (date of his will) and May 21, 1760 (date of his inventory) [Hart. Prob. Dist., 18:168-70.] No specific date of death is in print, with the month of April 1760 a reasonable approximation. On Oct. 12, 1749 at Wethersfield (by Rev. Daniel Russel of Stepney Parish, now Rocky Hill, Conn.), Nicholas m. 1) Sarah Wright, dau. of Dea. Ebenezer Wright and Sarah Butler, b. of record Sept. 3, 1726 at Wethersfield, Conn. She d. at Wethersfield Jan. 14, 1757, Æ 31 (g.s.) and is interred at the Center Cemetery in present-day Rocky Hill. Only one child is of actual birth record at Wethersfield, son Butler, b. Aug. 27, 1750 who d. in childhood Nov. 25, 1754. However, it is believed two other sons, William and John, were born by wife Sarah Wright as discussed below. The 1764 will of Nicholas Cady's first father-in-law, Dea. Ebenezer Wright of Rocky Hill, does not include as legatees any children of his deceased dau. Sarah (Wright) Cady. Nonetheless, the first two of three sons mentioned in Nicholas Cady's will (William, John and Josiah in that order), likely were by Sarah Wright. As found by a corresponding researcher, in 1768 Josiah Wright of Pittsfield, Mass., Nicholas Cady's brother-in-law, was "nominated and allowed to be Guardian unto Caleb Wadhams & Mary Wadhams children of Caleb Wadhams late of Pittsfield in the County of Berkshire dec'd. And to John Cady & William Cady both minors and children of Nicholas Cady late of Wethersfield in the County of Hartford dec'd att the desire of the sd John & William. As well to the Estate as the Persons of all the above named Minors. And Bond taken of the sd Josiah as on file for the faithfull Performance of his sd Guardianships."[1] That Josiah Wright of Pittsfield, Mass. was appointed guardian of his two nephews is highly suggestive they were then residing at Pittsfield either with their uncle Josiah Wright or the latter's elder brother William Wright also of Pittsfield. Nicholas' son William is probably the William Cady who m. in Jan. 1781 (day not stated) at Pittsfield, Mass., Naomi Welch. It is further believed he is one and the same as the William Cady who enlisted as a Private Jan. 1, 1781 for three years in the Conn. "Continental Line." Following the Rev. War, William and wife Naomi are believed to have settled at South Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont where William appears in the Apr.-May 1791 federal census preparatory to Vermont statehood, and continue to appear at South Hero in the 1800-1820 censuses. He appears in the 1835 Vermont List of Pensioners of the Conn. Continental Line living at Grand Isle County approved May 13, 1818 for a pension of $8 per month. The pension record states he died Feb. 19, 1837. In Nicholas Cady's probate record, on Mar. 6, 1775 son Josiah, then "aged 16," chose Charles Churchill (of Newington Parish at Wethersfield) to be his guardian. On its face this guardianship indicates Josiah Cady was b. on or after Mar. 7, 1759. Accordingly, by mid to late-1758 Nicholas Cady m. 2) Sarah Boardman, dau. of Nathaniel Boardman, Jr. and Ruth Parker, b. Oct. 20, 1739 at Wethersfield. Contrary to the 1886 "Churchill Family In America," which claims they had no children, Nicholas and 2nd wife Sarah Boardman had at least the aforementioned son Josiah. Nicholas Cady has no known gravestone, but due to his estate determined to be insolvent he is assumed to have been interred without gravestone at the Center Cemetery at Rocky Hill, Conn. The widow Sarah (Boardman) Cady m. 2) Nov. 29, 1769 as his 2nd wife, her 2nd cousin Dea. Jesse Churchill of Wethersfield's Newington Parish. Charles Churchill, the appointed guardian of Nicholas' son Josiah, was Sarah (Boardman)(Cady) Churchill's brother-in-law.
