Personal History

Newman Scarlett, sometimes Jr., (3rd,) second son of Newman Scarlett and Phebe (Ball), was born 20 August 1799, in Kingston (later renamed Granville), Vermont.[1]

A marriage license was issued by the court clerk 14 October 1820, in Clark Co., Ohio, for Newman Scarlett and Sally Poole. They were married the next day, in the same county, by John Whiteley, J.P.

In his will dated 18 May 1849,[4] Newman Scarlett of Noble County, Indiana, “being in a declining state of health,” bequeathed to his two sons Horrass P. and Alman B. equal shares of the 31 acres (purchased of Oliver Fairfield) of land lying in the township of Washington, Allen Co., Indiana. He bequeathed to his wife Sally, as long as she lived, the use of the homestead farm containing 200 acres in a part of sections 11 and 12 in the township of Noble, Noble Co. After her death it was to be equally divided between the four children, viz., Melissa, Adelia, [Horace P.,] and Alman B. His personal estate was to remain with the homestead farm to be at his wife's disposal. He appointed his brother Barney Scarlett sole executor. The will was proved 19 February 1850, by the oath of R.R. Sutton who appeared before the Clerk of the Noble Co. Probate Court.
