I Nathaniel Berding of Hartford, upon the River of Conecticott, planter, doe in this my last will & testament give unto Abigail my wife the sume of Twenty pownds to be payd her in such pay as may be comfortable for her, not in any horss Flesh. I doe allso give to Abigail my wife Three cowes, both which gifts for her to possesse & Injoy forever. I doe allso hereby give to Abigail my wife the summ of Ten pownds by the yeare, to be payd her fifty shillings in wheat, fifty shillings in pease, fifty shillings in Indian corne, & fifty shillings in porck, all at the countrey price. My will is allso that Abigail my wife shall have the Two old Lower roomes & the Celler & the Leanto for her to Dwell in or to disspose of, all these during the time of her life. I doe allso give to my son-in-law Thomas Spencer, the elder, the sume of £15. I doe allso give unto Samuel Andrews & Elizabeth his wife the sume of £40, to be payd him after the decease of my wife his mother. My parcell of Land at Podunck & my houshold stuffe to be to him for part of that Legacy. I doe allsoe give to Sarah Spencer, to Hanah Spencer, to Mary Spencer, to Martha Spencer, the Fower daughters of Thomas Spencer the elder, the sume of £10 to be equally divided amongst them, that is, to either of them 50 shillings, to be payd to them after my wive's decease. I doe allsoe give to John Andrews 20s. I doe allsoe give to Thomas Andrews 20s. My will is that my debts & these Legacies may be payd out of my moveable estate, that so much as may be of my houseing & other Lands may be kept intire. I have desired Paul Peck, senr, & George Graves to see this my will to be performed, & I doe hereby give to the sayd Paul Peck & George Graves the sume of forty shillings. I doe hereby give the remayning part of my estate to Jarred Spencer, my grandchild, whoe is the son of Thomas Spencer the eldest. I doe allsoe make the sayd Jarred Spencer my Executor. My will allso is that my wife Abigail should have the use of all my houshold stuff, and to choose which 3 cowes she will have.

    Nathaniel Bearding (Bardon)[1] was in Hartford in 1636, but not an original proprietor, having land only “by the courtesie of the town.” His home-lot in 1640 was on the brow of the bill, now called Asylum Hill, comprising six acres. He was chosen townsman, 1658; surveyor of highways, 1666. The name of his first wife is unknown, but he m. (2) Abigail, widow of William Andrews, of Hartford (q. v.)[2]; d. in Sept., 1674; will dated Jan. 7, 1674; inv., Sept. 14, £282. His widow, Abigail, d. March 20, 1682-3. Inv. £19. 10.-Ch. by first wife-Sarah, m. Sept. 11, 1645, Sergeant Thomas Spencer[3], of Hartford, as his second wife.

    BARDING, NATHANIEL, Hartford 1636, yet not an orig. propr. had only ch. Sarah, by first w. and by sec. w. Abigail, wid. of William Andrews, the sch.master had none, and d. 1674. His d. m. 11 Sept. 1645, Thomas Spencer. wh. call. a s. Nathaniel Barding to perpet. the name. His will speaks of these ch. of William Andrews, viz. Samuel, John, and Thomas, and of Samuel's w. Elizabeth.

    Nathaniel Bearding died September 1674; married, second, Abigail -----, died 20 March 1682/3, widow of William Andrews. Early member of First Church. Children: by first wife Sarah m Thomas Spencer Sept 11, 1645 (Hartford Town Record). Nathaniel Barding (Bardon) was in Hartford in 1636, but not an original proprietor, having land only “by the courtesie of the town”. His home lot in 1640 was in the brow of the hill, now called Asylum Hill, comprising six acres. Was chosen townsman, 1658; surveyor of highways, 1666. The name of his first wife is unknown. Will date 7 January 1674; inventory 14 September, £282. In 1649 he was fined 10s. For sleeping when on watch. In 1658, he (by the name of Berdin), with George Graves and others, complained to the General Court against Mr. Webster and the withdrawers at Hartford. Was a gentleman of good standing in the colony.
