On 20 July 1742, Nathan Barnes purchased 140 acres Shipley's Discovery, from Robert Shipley of Adam. On 11 Nov 1746, Nathan Barnes mortgaged to Philip Hammond 140 acres, part of Shipley's Discovery.

In his will he named his wife Ellis and left to his children, unnamed, the land where he was living.

His estate was inventoried on 1 April 1760 by Robert Davis and Vachel Dorsey, and the personal estate was valued at L85.6.10. John Dorsey and John Wood signed as creditors, and Adam and Robert Barnes signed as next of kin. Ellis Barnes, the executrix, filed the inventory on 13 June 1760.
