Baltimore County Tax Lists for the Years 1701-1706 show James Barnes living in Elk Ridge Hundred (then in Baltimore County, later in Anne Arundel County, [today] currently in Howard County.) In 1702, Darby Regan, Thomas Mawdey, and Joseph Hall were with him. In 1703 Regan, Hall and Thomas Peregnay were in his household; Hall and Thomas Ottaway were with him in 1705; and in 1706 only Joseph Hall was listed in the Barnes household.

On 29 Sep 1712, Richard Shipley conveyed to James Barnes 103 acres of Eve's Dowry, being part of a larger tract called Adam the First (located near Oakland Mills in Howard County.)

James Barnes died by 13 July 1726 when his estate was inventoried by Jno. Hammond of Charles and [Thomas?] Wainwright, and valued at L85,18.9. The inventory included a set of carpenter's tools and some shoemaker's tools, in addition to the usual furniture and farming equipment. Robert Shipley, "bro," signed as kin, and Richard Snowden and Phi. Hammond were listed as creditors, although Hammond was reluctant to sign at first has he claimed the goods were not well appraised. The inventory was filed on 6 May 1727 by Ketura Barnes, administratrix of the deceased. An additional inventory was filed on 13 [Oct] 1727, totaling L0.18.9.

Ketura Barnes administered the estate on 11 May 1728.

Does anyone have the (missing) connecting family section for this quandary?

James Barnes, who m. Keturah Shipley, immigrated to this country from Essex County, England in 1676, settling in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Information has it that James father was named Richard.

William Barnes of England was the father of son's David, Richard and William Barnes who immigrated to this county from England in 1758.

In this country the three brothers: David purchased property and settled close to the above James and family (Anne Arundel and Baltimore County, Maryland, later Frederick which became Washington County, Maryland). Richard settled first in Pennsylvania, and then moved close to his brother David, who was established as above with the other Barnes', brother William settled in New York.

David I's son, David II was the founder of Barnesville, Montgomery County, Maryland. David I's son, James was the founder of Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio. Eventually both families emigrated to Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio.

The passing of family information from various members, states these families are connected, cousins???, hence, James and the three brothers Barnes are related. Who are those missing connections?

Caleb Barnes, Sr., m. Honour Stevens, my 4th great-grandparents. Caleb is the son of James III, who died in Nelson County, KY, 1795.

David Barnes of the above three brother's also had a son Caleb. Caleb was a name frequently used by both these families.
