Adams (Minna Worthington), for more than 50 years a civic leader in Jacksonville, Ill., died Jan. 13, 1948 following a stroke. Her husband, a prominent physician, passed away three weeks later while visiting in Cambridge, MA with their son, Dr. George W. Adams, former secretary of Harvard University graduate school, now dean of Colorado College. Mrs. Adams, member of a pioneer Illinois family, was considered one of the great women of Morgan county. After graduation from Monticello, she taught in public schools of the Pittsfield area and narrowly missed election as superintendent of Pike county schools. She was believed to be the first woman to run for office in Illinois. When she married and moved to Jacksonville in 1896, she began her tireless work for child welfare and public health. She was co-founder of Oaklawn, the Morgan county tuberculosis sanitorium; served voluntarily with the Red Cross in both World Wars; and was active in cultural groups and the State Street Presbyterian church of Jacksonville. Surviving are two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren. References
