Michael HUFF (June 1741 Kent Co, MD - 1818, prob. Harrison Co, OH) served in the French and Indian War under Lt Richard Wells and Capt. Norris. In 1758 his company took part in the Forbe's Expedition against Fort Duquesne. This experience gave Michael first-hand knowledge about the Western frontier, and the struggle with the French and Indians over who would colonize it. (There is some question over whether it was the father or son who served in this War, as both settled on the frontier.)

On 1761 in Bedford Co, PA, Michael md Hannah DODDRIDGE (14 Mar 1742 Frederick Co, MD - c 1836, prob. Highland Co, OH), dau of Joseph and Mary (BIGGS) DODDRIDGE, a pioneer family then living in Western Pennsylvania. Michael and Hannah started their family while living at Great Cove in Colerain twp of Bedford Co, PA. There were two Michael HUFF grants on 6 Feb 1767. Grant 2707 was for 100 acres in Friend's Cove, and grant 2708 was for 200 acres on Cove Creek adjacent to Garret PENDERGRAST. These could be for father and son, or they could be two grants to the same person. The same day grants 2709 and 2710 were made to John HUFF and Elijah HUFF. Both Michael HUFF, Sr, and Michael HUFF, Jr, were on the 1768, 1769, and 1770 tax lists for that twp. By 1779, Michael and Hannah had moved to Hopewell twp in Washington Co, PA, where their last child was born. (Michael HUFF was paid as a witness in a case of Joseph WORLEY vs Elijah HUFF for three days attendance in court before Nov, 1779, and for three days after Nov, 1779.) In 1790, they moved into Ohio Co, VA, (now Brooks Co, WV) and in 1796 into Jefferson Co, OH (now Harrison Co).

A family closely associated for some time with that of Michael and Hannah was that of Michael's brother, John HUFF, who md Hannah's sister, Sarah DODDRIDGE. John and Sarah decided to go downriver to KY, but he was killed while hunting in preparation for the trip. Sarah took her family to KY, while Michael and Hannah stayed in OH.
