John HUFF (c 1743 Maryland - killed by Indians in Ohio in 1783/84) was the son of Michael and Elizabeth Huff.

He did not get to KY, but his widow and family did. About 1767, several HUFF families had moved from MD or from Lancaster Co, PA, to Friend's Cove in Bedford Co, PA. There were several Michael HUFF grants, several John HUFF GRANTS, and several Elijah HUFF grants. It seems likely that there were two Michael HUFF individuals, Sr, and Jr, and two John HUFF invividuals, all related. In one of John's land grant there, he was shown to be of Lancaster borough, so he have have lived in Lancaster for some time. This John may have been brother to Michael, Sr. The other John may have been son of Michael, Sr. More research is required to determine if there were two John HUFF individuals in the land transactions.

John, son of Michael, Sr, and his brother,Michael, Jr, married sisters, daughters of Joseph and Mary (BIGGS) DODDRIDGE, either in MD or PA after the families had moved to the frontier. After living for some time in Bedford Co, PA, they moved west into Washington Co, which was claimed by both VA and PA. John HUFF received a VA land certificate in Independence twp in Washington Co in 1773. He was in and out of court records in Washington Co along with Michael HUFF, Sr, Michael HUFF, Jr, Elijah HUFF, and Nicholas HOUGH. Some of these records are for Ohio Co, VA One John HUFF served in the Rev. War in Capt Scott's Comp, 4th Bn, Washington Co, Militia.

From Washington Co, PA, in 1784, John HUFF and other families were preparing for a move downriver to Kentucky. They stopped near Fort Pitt, and John HUFF went hunting in the Indian lands nearby. The Indians found and killed him. Sarah Elizabeth (DODDRIDGE) HUFF (1745 MD- c 1796 Hardinsburg, Hardin Co, KY) took her family on to KY and her younger ch grew up in and around Hardinsburg. It is possible that one of the ch took the HOUGH spelling, while others were so recorded randomly. One of the probable sons, Aaron, possibly became associated with the Moses HOUGH family in Hardin and Spencer counties. After his death in the War of 1812, Aaron's sons John and Joseph lived in Nelson Co. It is possible that this branch became HOUGH, as it was not identified as HUFF after 1825.
