Burial: St. Margaret's Cemetery, Orleans, IA

  5.   In November 1898- Michael was thrown out and injured by a fractious team and his hands so badly frozen while wandering about on the prairie. -The March 31, 1899- Spirit Lake Beacon reads " M.J. Duffy desires to publicly thank the friends and neighbors who have placed him under a weight of obligation by continual kindness during his winter of trouble. Through several operations Mr. Duffy has lost from the effects of freezing in the early winter all the fingers on both hands and one thumb. He has suffered much and his loss of working capacity is enough to more or less discourage the stoutest heart".--on April 14, 1899- they write "... the loss of his fingers is a serious matter, but Mike has no thought of giving up. He will tackle the work again and get in his best licks."
