BIOGRAPHY: Living at 876 S. Goodman in Rochester, NY in 1920 per the 1920 census.

Lived in Syracuse, New York for awhile before moving to Rochester.

Merton was an engraver/lithographer by trade and was one of the few individuals in the world who could have engraved counterfeit money because of his skill. He worked for Stecher Traung in Rochester, NY. He won the world's microscopic writing championship in the early 1900's. A book of his artwork is being held by Harold S. Knight [2000]. He is noted in the family for writing the Lord's Prayer in an area that could be covered by the head of a pin. This is currently held by Harold S. Knight [2000]. He was fond of ice cream, and trolley cars. He died of diabetes.

Lola Celia (KNIGHT) GURLEY letter to Harold S. Knight dated Jan. 29, 1944. ""...Your grandfather, James Knight, married Avis Celia Smith in New Woodstock, July 28, 1861. She was born at North Brookfield, N.Y., April 23, 1838." Their first son was Frank Wellon Knight, born May 4, 1862. (He died in Syracuse on Sept. 23, 1935). Their second son was Merton Jay Knight, born at East Schodack (Rens. Co.) N.Y. on Nov. 21st, 1865. (I have no record of his death. You probably have it. Will you let me know.) Their daughter, Lola Celia Knight, was born March 1, 1877."."

BURIAL: Buried at Highland Cemetery in Rochester, New York. He was a very skilled Lithograph Engraver. Born in Albany, New York per 1920 census. Living at 1105 S. Clinton St, Rochester, NY in 1900. Listed as "Morton" in 1900 census.
