The Illinois State Marriage Index 1763 to 1900 has an entry for a marriage of Melissa F. Kendall and Eleazer E. Sheffield in McHenry Co., IL on 10/18/1852 Vol. A Page 27, Licence 1103. There was an Eleazer Sheffield living in Prairie Du Chien, Crawford Co., WI in the 1850 census. Age 23 born in Ohio and working as a shoemaker.

I found the Sheffield family in McHenry, McHenry Co., IL in the 1850 census. Eleazer wasn't listed with them but they were from Ohio and had a 22 year old daughter, so the Eleazer I found in Wisconsin could easily be their son.

Mendocino Beacon, 26 Mar 1892 From a private letter we learn that Mrs. J. D. Ball died at Boonville on Wednesday fo last week from apoplexy.

After her their mother's death, the twins were separated. Melissa was probably raised by her mother's younger sister Sarah "Sally" Henrietta Burnham and her husband Abel C. Smith, Alonzo probably by his father's sister and her husband Diana & Frank Riford.

The valley was shocked and sorrow -stricken by the sudden death of Mrs. J. D. Ball. She was apparently in good health on the morning of the 16th but during the day was attacked by paralysis, and died at 7 p.m. Her two youngest children, a boy of eighteen and a girl of fifteen, left in good cheer for school that morning and were summoned home in the evening to find their beloved mother in a dying condition. Alonzo Kendall, twin brother of the deceased, came from Manchester, and J. D. Ball, Jr., eldest son, came from Gualala for the funeral. Her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Hunt of Santa Rosa, did not get here till after the burial. The family are old residents of this place, and few here now can remember the valley without them. The people of the valley sympathize and mourn with the bereaved family. Anderson Valley Girl.

Various records indicate that the twins were born in Bethel, Windsor, Vermont, Branley's Veil, Kirby Township, Caledonia, Vermont and Malden, Middlesex, Vermont. Their mother died from childbed fever in Branley's Veil just a few days after their birth so it is likely that Branley's Veil is the correct birth place.
