Matthew contracted scarlet fever as a child and became a deaf mute. His wife was also a deaf mute. They met while attending a school for the deaf in New York City, the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb. The school's annual reports list both of them as students.
Marriage Notice from New Paltz Times, June 25, 1884:
At the residence of the bride's parents in Creek Locks, by the Rev. J. M. Compton, MATTHEW J. IRWIN of Napanoch and Miss Sarah H. ELTING, both deaf mutes.
