Matthew Cox was baptised on 26th April 1840 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, son of a dressmaker called Catherine Cox, formerly Mason, and her husband William Cox, a blacksmith and farmer. Matthew appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents, siblings and paternal grandmother at Barnack. His grandmother died later in 1851, and his father died in 1856. The 1861 census finds Matthew living with his mother and two brothers at Barnack. By this time Matthew was working as a wheelwright.
On 29th December 1864, aged 24, Matthew married a dressmaker called Maria Mason, who was from the nearby hamlet of Pilsgate. They went on to have seven children between 1865 and 1877. The first couple of children were born in the nearby town of Stamford, after which they returned to Barnack, settling at the New Inn on Stamford Road (which was also called Pilsgate Road at the time).
The family appears at the New Inn in each census from 1871 to 1901. Matthew's mother died in 1876. Matthew continued to work as a wheelwright and carpenter as well as being the publican of the New Inn. By 1901 Matthew and Maria also had grandchildren living there with them.
Maria died in 1906, aged 70. Matthew survived her by nearly ten years. He died on 5th November 1915, aged 75.
