Mary Cox was baptised on 15th March 1835 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, daughter of a dressmaker called Catherine Cox, formerly Mason, and her husband William Cox, a blacksmith and farmer. Mary was the sixth of the couple's eleven children, although two of her older siblings had died young before Mary was born.
Mary appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living in Barnack with her parents, siblings, and paternal grandmother, who died later in 1851. Mary's father died in 1856.
On 9th October 1860, aged 25, Mary married a wheelwright called Francis Adams. They did not marry in Barnack, but in London, nearly ninety miles south of Barnack. Francis had been born in London, although he had been living in Barnack in the 1851 census.
After their marriage, Mary and Francis returned to Barnack, appearing there in the 1861 census, and where they went on to have four sons between 1862 and 1868, although the second boy died when he was about two years old.
Some time between 1868 and 1871, the family left Barnack and moved some eighty miles east to Norwich, where they appear in the 1871 census living at Coe's Yard on Upper Westwick Street. Francis died later that same year, aged just 36.
After Francis's death, Mary and her surviving sons returned to Barnack. Mary's mother died in 1876. The 1881 and 1891 censuses each find Mary living on Main Street with her sons, and working as a dressmaker. By 1901 Mary was living at Uffington and Barnack Railway Station on the Midland Railway, a little to the north of Barnack village, where her eldest son, Matthew, was the station master.
Mary died at Barnack on 8th April 1908, aged 73. She had been a widow for over half her life.
