Francis Adams was born on 16th March 1835 at St Pancras in Middlesex, in the northern suburbs of London. He was the son of Harriet Adams, formerly Haydon, and her husband John Adams, a glover. He appears to have had a twin brother called Henry. The two boys were baptised twice: first in 1837 at the independent Albany Chapel on Frederick Street, then into the Church of England the following year at the newly-opened Christ Church on Albany Street. At the time of both baptisms the family was living at Cumberland Market, just east of Regents Park. The 1841 census finds the family living at nearby Munster Street.
By 1851, Francis had left London and moved to Barnack in Northamptonshire, nearly ninety miles north of London, where he worked as an apprentice wheelwright for his uncle, Francis Haydon (his mother's brother).
On 9th October 1860, aged 25, Francis married Mary Cox. She was from Barnack, but they did not marry there. Instead they married at St George's Church in Bloomsbury, in the western suburbs of London. After their marriage Francis and Mary returned to Barnack, appearing there in the 1861 census, and where they went on to have four sons between 1862 and 1868, although the second boy died when he was about two years old. Francis worked as a wheelwright.
Some time between 1868 and 1871, the family left Barnack and moved some eighty miles east to Norwich, where they appear in the 1871 census living at Coe's Yard on Upper Westwick Street.
Francis died later that same year, aged just 36. Mary survived him by nearly 37 years, although never remarried.
