Maria Mason was baptised on 13th December 1835 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, daughter of Ann Mason, formerly Clay, and her husband John Mason, a groom. The family lived at Pilsgate, a hamlet to the north west of the parish. The 1841 census finds Maria living there with her mother and siblings. Her father was away from home on census night.
In 1851 Maria was working as a servant to an ironmonger and his family at Kings Cliffe, about six miles to the south-west. By 1861 Maria had returned to live with her parents at Pilsgate, and she was working as a dressmaker.
On 29th December 1864, aged 29, Maria married a wheelwright and publican called Matthew Cox at Barnack. They went on to have seven children between 1865 and 1877. The first couple of children were born in the nearby town of Stamford, after which they returned to Barnack, settling at the New Inn on Stamford Road (which was also called Pilsgate Road at the time).
The family appears at the New Inn in each census from 1871 to 1901. By 1901 Maria and Matthew also had grandchildren living there with them.
Maria died at the age of 70, being buried at Barnack on 24th January 1906. Matthew survived her by nearly ten years.
