    My g-g-g-grandfather, Mathew ARMSTRONG was born in North Carolina about 1776. In 1830 he was listed in Sumner Co. Tn. with his wife, three sons and one daughter. The 1850 census of Sumner Co. listed him as 74 years of age with his wife Sarah, 68 and son Joseph, 30.

    From census reports and Mathew's will it can be determined that he and Sarah had the following children (not in order:)

    * 1. Elizabeth ARMSTRONG, born 1803, married Joseph H. WISE 23 Mar. 1819, Sumner Co. Tn.
    * 2. Charlotte ARMSTRONG, born 1808, married William Kidd MARQUESS. (my g-g-grandparents)
    * 3. Susan ARMSTRONG, born 1813, married Thompson BALDRIDGE.
    * 4. Robert ARMSTRONG, born 1815, married Malinda STROTHER 1 Feb. 1837, Sumner Co. Tn.
    * 3. Elizabeth ARMSTRONG, born 1810/15, married Joseph H. WISE 23 Mar. 1819, Sumner Co. Tn.
    * 5. Joseph ARMSTRONG, born 1820.
    * 6. Mathew ARMSTRONG, Jr. born 1820/25, married Nancy MARQUESS in Sumner Co. Tn. 2 Nov 1837. He died before 23 June 1851 (date of Mathew Sr.'s will)
    * 7. Sarah ARMSTRONG, born 1827
    * 8. Polly Ann ARMSTRONG married John LEDDY 26 Oct. 1826, Sumner Co. Tn.
    * 9. Soundity (?) Armstrong

    Mathew's will was written 23 June 1851 and is recorded in the "Loose Records of Sumner Co. Tn." microfilm roll 649, Tn. State Archives.

    The quality of the will is too poor for printing. Narrative is as follows:

    I Mathew Armstrong do make and publish this as my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at this time. First I direct that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid as soon after my death as possible out of any money that may be possessed of or may come in to the hands of my daughter Soundity (?). I give to my two sons Robert Armstrong and Joseph Armstrong be equally divided between them after disposing of as much as will pay my just debts as first named. Secondly, I give to my daughters Elizabeth Wise, Charlotte Marcus, Susan Baldridge each one feather bead (as spelled in will) one cow and calf and sow and pigs which they have heretofore received. Fourth I give to the heirs of my daughter Polly Ann Leddy one dollar. Fifth, I give to my grandson John Armstrong son of Mathew Armstrong dec'd one dollar. Lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint Josiah Watson my executor. In witness whereof I do to this my will set my hand and seal this 23rd day of June 1851. Mathew Armstrong (his mark) Signed sealed and published in our presence and we have subscribed our names hereto in the presence of the testator this 23rd day of June 1851. The word them ... before assigned. Josia
    Watson, Isiah Barnett.

    There are no death dates for Mathew or Sarah. My g-g-grandparents (Charlotte Armstrong MARQUESS (aka Lottie Marquess) and her husband William Kidd MARQUESS later moved to the central Missouri area, where there are now many descendants in the Morgan and Pettis county areas.
