Mary Ann Tapner was baptised on 23rd March 1823 at South Bersted in Sussex, daughter of Mary Tapner, formerly Grant, and her husband Thomas Tapner, an agricultural labourer. In 1844, aged 21, she married a fisherman named Robert Philpot, with whom she had at least one son. After Mary Ann's mother's death in 1851, her widowed father spent some time living with Mary Ann and Robert, including on the night of the 1861 census. Mary Ann has yet to be researched after 1861.
