Family stories had stated that Mary Swope was a childhood playmate of James Whitcomb Riley. Census records have confirmed that they did live in the same neighborhood as children. At history of Greenfield, Indiana indicates that James W. Riley and Mary Swope were Charter Members of the Chautauque Literary and Scientific Club organized in 1880. There are a couple of Riley's poems that refer to Mary and the Swope family.

(Medical):The handwritten note by Edith M. Minnemeyer states that Mary died in 1885. She may have died giving birth to Cora May or shortly thereafter.

(Research):A special Thank You goes to Diana Gale Matthiesen, a Strub family genealogist; and to Jack Eaton, a member of Randon Acts of Genealogical Kindness in Indianapolis, IN, for their time and effort spent to help verify Strub and Swope information.
