Thomas was a grain/commission merchant, born 22apr1839 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, son of James NEWTON and Margaret CRAWFORD (R. Stephenson). In 1861 Jane McNair Scott (b. 1814 Glasgow), house proprieter, lived as head at 28 Eldon St., Greenock, Renfrewshire, with Mary Scott (b. 1817 Glasgow), Anne M. Stevenson (b. 1846 Stirling), niece, and Mary M. M. Stevenson (b.1851 Stirling), niece (census). Mary M. M. Newton corresponded with Stuart McIntosh nee Bell (b. 1842). In 1881 Mary M. M.
