Thomas was a grain/commission merchant, born 22apr1839 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, son of James NEWTON and Margaret CRAWFORD (R. Stephenson). In 1861 Jane McNair Scott (b. 1814 Glasgow), house proprieter, lived as head at 28 Eldon St., Greenock, Renfrewshire, with Mary Scott (b. 1817 Glasgow), Anne M. Stevenson (b. 1846 Stirling), niece, and Mary M. M. Stevenson (b.1851 Stirling), niece (census). Mary M. M. Newton corresponded with Stuart McIntosh nee Bell (b. 1842). In 1881 Mary M. M. Newton (b. 1851 Stirling) and children Elizabeth E. (b. 1875 Gourock), Thomas B. (b. 1876 Greenock and Mary M. (b. 1879 Gourock) were boarders at 59 W. King St., Row, Dunbartonshire, the house of Miss Glass (census). In 1891 Mary M. M. Newton (b.1852 Stirling) lived on private means with her children, Elizabeth S. Newton (b. 1875 Gourock), Thomas B. Newton (b. 1876 Greenock) and Moubray S. Newton (b. 1879 Gourock), at 15 Warriston Crescent, Edinburgh (census). Mary M. M. Newton corresponded with Stuart McIntosh nee Bell (b. 1842) on 10dec1912 from 14 Murrayfield Gdns, Edinburgh, reporting on the illness of her daughter Moubray and the death of “Martin’s wife (poor thing, she had a hard life)”.
