Mary Cathryn STREBIG [Sister Basilede] Namesake |
Mary K's original birth certificate, as reported in a WPA abstract, reportedly says she was named Geraldine Mary SMITH. However, she was always called Mary C or Mary K, initially using the name Mary Cathryn, eventually changing to Mary Kathryn, and generally known as Mary K since 1960's. The Geraldine Mary was probably named in honor of an aunt, a nun who took the religious name of Sister Basilede, but was born Geraldine Mary STREBIG. The 1920 census for Ft Wayne shows her under the name Mary Catherine, at age 2.
Mary K is the second of four children. She graduated St Catherine's Academy in Ft Wayne, and worked in offices for International Accountants Society [a correspondence school] and an insurance company, then worked 5 years during the war making models and testing turbochargers for General Electric Corp. Afterwards, she moved to Coeur d'Alene and was a secretary at the High School.

- ↑ Birth certificate shows Geraldine Mary; My dad always called me Mary Cathryn; in 7th grade, a nun told me I had to change it to Kathryn; I went by "Kate SMITH" for a couple of years. I settled on Kay, then later Mary Kay. I was 18 when I found out about the Geraldine name. There was a Geraldine next door, but we could not play with them because they were Lutheran.

- ↑ "I would collect the names and phone number and address of guys I knew, and give them to my boss, Fred A BRUG. He would send a letter, "you have been recommended to us because you possess the proper qualifications for membership in the International Accountant Society". Then, the boss would call them and make an appointment. I worked in Ft Wayne, but the headquarters was in Chicago. I did this for a couple of years, mostly answering the phone for the salesmen. $5 a week wasn't much money. I got an offer to work upstairs for an insurance company for $11 a week, so I did, but that only lasted three months."
- ↑ This lasted about three months. The boss was having an affair with the office manager. When she announced she was getting married to someone else, it almost broke his heart."
- ↑ GE built a new building, gearing up for the war effort, to build superchargers for the B-17 airplane. I worked there five years; my Dad was a fireman or policeman there at the plant. I worked in assembly, started out tying stators, inspecting the linen covering on the wire for scratches and repairing or set-aside. I soldered leads on the two wires sticking out. There was a strike, but I didn't want to go out. When I told them that, they told me I didn't have any choice. We were out about five weeks. When I came back, I worked in photostats, trimming photostats and lithographs. I also worked on small motors and folding something. I took a leave of absence in 1945 to travel to Idaho with Fran GILLIG.
January 1946 Indiana Tax Return for Mary K SMITH shows she earned $1377.08 in 1945 at General Electric, as a "general office clerk" for General Electric Co, 1635 Boradway, Ft Wayne. Mary K lived at 2410 Thompson, Ft Wayne.
- ↑ "I was still getting some money from GE, but Donna SMITH and her mom, Mrs DAVIS, conspired to get me a job, telling me I had to work. I got on with the HS, working under Mr Harold EVANS."
- ↑ "we were going to get married in June, when school got out, but moved it back to May 8, and applied for the fire lookout job. USFS wouldn't take an application from an unmarried couple. We couldn't find a place to live in town, with all the people moving there after the war, so we applied for a lookout job."
