She is on the 1880 census, age 8, with mother and siblings in Valley, Polk Co., Ia.[p 541 fam. #131/134 ] She is the youngest child mentioned in her father's estate, 1880. On the 1900 census, age 29, Mary is living with brother Johnson in Grimes, Polk Co., Ia. In the home is her mother , Katherine, age 73, and sister Priscilla, age 36. Mary states she is 29, b. Sept "1868", and single. [p 290 fam #151/158] "She went as a bride to a farm near Rippey, (Greene Co., Ia.) where the hollyhocks grow," the family record tells us. We find the fairly newly-weds on their farm in Rippey on the 1910 census. Herschel is 39 and born in Ia. He states his parents were born in "U.S." Mary is 38 and declares they have been married nine years. She has had no children. Wit h them we see "Percilla" Rittgers age 40, and listed as "sister in law", and Katherine Rittgers, 83, who immigrated from Germany in 1851, his mother-in-law. Also listed is Herman Rhoad, 11 months, an adopted son born in Iowa. His parents birthplace not known.[ED 106, p. 9A; fam #188/190] On the 1920 census, age 48, Mary continues with husband Hershel, age 49, a farmer. Also listed are Herman, age 10, and Priscilla Rittgers, sis-in-law, age 52.[ED 118, p 4B , fam #87/87] They are buried in Block Twelve, lot 41, Rippey Cemetery, Rippey, Greene Co., Ia.[Tombstone, RgrC em, p. 51] References
