Mary May "May" was married when she was 14 years old to George Emery according to family lore and they never divorced. May was a WWI Red Cross Nurse. After the war she worked in the hospitals around Chemung County, New York, in Elmira and Penn Yan. She worked as a private duty nurse for the mother of Claude Burgett in Elmira. She also took care of Claude and they presented themselves as husband and wife. May then took care of the mothers of other well-to-do gentlemen until they died and then she took care of the gentlemen until they died.

May married Roswell Gerlach "Ross" when she was 75 years old. She was still married to George Emery and held property jointly with him but Ross didn't find out until after she died.
