Samuel Perry Reed fought in the Civil War: Regiment 143 Pennsylvania Vol., Company 1. He was wounded below the left knee during the battle of Laurel Ridge.
He married his first wife, Elmira/Almira Houseknecht about 1869-70 after the war. By the 1880 census they had five children: Sarah Ellen, Chester Dana, Jane Lillian, Estella Grace and Lucy Maude. The middle names are important to know because that is what most or all of them went by. They lived on a farm in Franklin, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania in 1870 and 1880. Elmira died 1881, leaving five children age 10 and younger. Samuel (Sam) was unable to run his farm and take care of his children so he hired Emma Matilda Kreppenneck, age 15, to take care of the children, meals and house. Emma went by the name Tilley, a shortened version of Matilda.
Emma was twenty six years younger than Sam. They married 1882 and had twelve children. They stayed on their farm for several years, until 1898, when he traded his farm for a general store in Lairdsville. By then Sam and Tilley had seven or eight children. They ran the store as a family, the children helping out as they grew up.
