Wife of William Fortunatus Dodson: Mary Jane Queen. Her parents was James Queen and Priscilla Job. Mary Jane Queen-b--4 Jan. 1845, Wayne Co., TN. d--19 May 1936, Riverside, California. When she was a young girl during the Civil War; she lived on her father’s farm just outside of Nashville, TN. Here is a story that she told and was told from generation to generation. A group of Union solders, in a great hurry, rode up to the farm one morning. She was ironing her pantaloons on the back porch dressed only in her slip. They rushed in, asked for food, which was in short supply; finding none they took three of the horses in the barn and some feed. They bid her good-bye and galloped off. Her family was for the South; some were for the North in that area. She was very frightened and afraid for her safety but they didn't bother her. They were very respectable, she said. She often talked about her great uncle, Alexander Campbell; he came from Scotland. He was a teacher and a minister. He wrote a very important book for their time; she had forgotten the name of the book. As a matter of interest, life in the mid- 1800’s in Texas, Tennessee and Kentucky, where our relatives lived was very rough. Many people lived off the land, fishing and hunting for their food. They had help from the Indians, but the Indians would some times revert to their savage ways and kill the whites. That led to a lot of bloodshed. Mary Jane Queen had a daughter named Cora Sallie, she was born in 1886 in Cleburne, Texas, near Dallas 1930 Riverside, CA 312/316 COLBERT B.
