Mary Magdalene “Molly or Polly” Phillippi Shupe

Fourth of twelve children of Christopher Stophell and Elizabeth Steffey Phillippi, she was born in Virginia. The year is an estimate. She married Jacob Shupe, Sr. in Wythe Co. Virginia on May 19, 1814. They had 12 children. Jacob, Sr. died after a fall in a construction accident in 1856. He is buried at a cemetery in Galde Spring, VA. Molly died before 1880.
They owned over 182 acres of farmland on the banks of Cripple Creek. At least 20 unmarked graves lie on a hill above that farm. The area was known into the 20th Century as 'Shupe Hollow.' It is likely Molly and many of her children occupy those graves. At least five are known to have remained at home to farm and never married. Several who married were listed in the 1880 census as living very near.
