The sixth child of John [Johannes] and Anna Catherina Slemp [Slimp] Shupe [Schupp], he was born after his parents moved from Pennsylvania to the Cripple Creek section of what is now Wythe Co. Virginia. They owned 150 acres.
Jacob married Mary Magdalene Phillipy (Phillippi) on May 19, 1814 in Wythe County. Jacob and his family farmed. In 1823, 250 acres lying on the waters of Cripple Creek were surveyed for him, some of which he later sold. He also worked as a carpenter.
In 1832 he was hired to help construct buildings on the new Emery and Henry College. The family moved from Wythe to Washington County to do so. While working on the Byers Hall Fine Arts Center, Jacob fell from a scaffold and broke his back. After lingering in pain, he died as a result of his injuries. His tombstone in "Old Presbyterian Church cemetery" at Glade Springs, VA reads "In Memory of Jacob Shupe." died 26 May 1856 age about 68 yrs.

The unmarried children remained in Washington Co. purchasing 35 acres and living and farming the land on the south side of Walker's Mountain near Snavely's Store which is north of Meadowview. The area was referred to as Shupe Hollow by the locals. The family lived in a two-section log house with wood floors. Each member of the family is listed with an occupation in the 1850 census.
From extant letters sent by John W., who had migrated to Illinois, we know Jacob Jr, Catherine, Barbara, Magdalena, Rosanna, George, Ann and Amanda were all alive in 1880. Mother Molly (Polly, Mary) was dead.
Hezakiah, who joined the Washington County Virginia Militia during the Civil War, has no further record after that.
An unmarked graveyard with 20 graves is located on a hlll to the west of the Shupe land, an area still know locally as Shupe Hollow into the 20th Century. It is likely most of the elder Shupe family, possibly including mother Mary Magdalena, is buried there, but no documentation has been found.
The family was deeply religious and connected to the Lutheran church in earlier generations.
