"Mary Kathern" was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky to Jack Oakley & Jennie Bee Martin and was raised between there and Clark County, Kentucky. She was 9 years old when her Mama Jenny Bee passed away due to typhoid fever and her and her only surviving sibling Jean went to live with her grandma (Maw).
She wasn't raised around Jenny Bee's side of the family.
At 14 with the help of Maw, she snuck off and married Willie White. Her Dad (Jack) found out and had it immediately annulled.
On November 15, 1947 she married William in their hometown and together they raised 9 children.
I have heard stories about her being wild and bad tempered but I never witnessed that side of her, to me she was Mamaw. The woman that always cooked Sunday dinners and Big meals on the holidays and had parties on our birthdays. She loved her family, especially her sister Jean and we would visit Kentucky often. When we moved back to Kentucky around 1977 She would host family reunions around Grandpa Jack's birthday every year. That tradition was carried on until he passed in 1994.
She spoiled me and my kids rotten and loved to cook me her homemade Mushroom Chicken. It seemed like she gave up on living after Papaw passed away. If you asked her what she was doing she'd say "I'm sittin' here waitin' on your Papaw to come get me." Close to her time of death she mentioned him visiting her a few times. When it was her time I believe he did come and take her home.
