Mrs. Nellie Whitmore, 81, a pioneer risident of Winifred, died early Tuesday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm in the Creel Funeral home with the Rev. Randall Larson officiating. Burial will be in the City Cemetery.
She was bron January 12, 1874, in Avoca, Mich., the daughter of Mrs. Mary Ellen & Lewis O'Dette. Mrs. Whitmore received her early schooling in Michigan and on December 2, 1899 was married to Daniel H. Whitmore in Avoca.
With her husband, Mrs. Whitmore came to Winifred in April, 1913, to take up a cliam east of town. She taught school in and around Roy and Winifred from 1914 to 1933. Both the Whitmores helped many of the early claim holders get established in the territory. Whitmore freighted in, by four hourse wagons, the household goods and lumber for the houses of many before the railroad was built from Hilger to Winifred.
The first church services in the area were held in thieir home. She attended the Methodist church of Winifred and was a member of the Methodist WSCS.
Survivors include her husband, two sons, Russel H. and Daniel O., both of Winifred; a daughter, Mrs. Walter C. Groff, Philadelphia, Pa., four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren."
