Bio: Mary Ann Good was born between 1822 and 1824 on the plantation of English landowner Samuel Gist near Richmond, Virginia in Hanover County. In 1835, Mary and her family migrated by foot some 480 miles with 20 other families to their new property in Highland County, Ohio. This property on what became known as the “Gist Settlement”; was paid for with money and other assets left behind by Gist when he died some 20 years before in 1815. On August 5, 1842, Mary Ann Lawson married Hinton Good, son of Rosanna Good and apart of the Good family that traveled with the Lawsons on the journey from Virginia to Ohio. They had six children together. However, Mary Ann does not appear in the household of Hinton Good in the 1850 census so it is assumed she died sometime between the birth of her last child in 1848 and 1850, perhaps by complications of or perhaps even during childbirth. Mary Ann was survived by her husband, Hinton Good; sons, Anthony, Charles and Thomas Good, daughters, Charity, Frances and Martha Good; parents, Robert and Charity Lawson; sister, Elizabeth (John) Carey; brothers, Thomas Lawson and Woodson Williams; and nieces, Margaret and Julia Carey.It is assumed Mary is buried in the Gist Settlement Cemetery. Thomas died shortly after Mary in the 1850s. The remaining children were divided with Anthony, Charles and Frances staying with Hinton and Charity and Martha being raised by their grandparents, Robert and Charity Lawson.
