    Mary Ann Lawson Good
Birth: 1823 Hanover County, Virginia, USA
Death: 1850 (aged 26–27) Gist Settlement, Highland County, Ohio, USA
Burial: Gist Settlement Cemetery, Gist Settlement, Highland County, Ohio, USA
    Memorial #: 190981274
Bio: Mary Ann Good was born between 1822 and 1824 on the plantation of English landowner Samuel Gist near Richmond, Virginia in Hanover County. In 1835, Mary and her family migrated by foot some 480 miles with 20 other families to their new property in Highland County, Ohio. This property on what became known as the “Gist Settlement”; was paid for with money and other assets left behind by Gist when he died some 20 years before in 1815. On August 5, 1842, Mary Ann Lawson married Hinton Good, son of Rosanna Good and apart of the Good family that traveled with the Lawsons on the journey from Virginia to Ohio. They had six children together. However, Mary Ann does not appear in the household of Hinton Good in the 1850 census so it is assumed she died sometime between the birth of her last child in 1848 and 1850, perhaps by complications of or perhaps even during childbirth. Mary Ann was survived by her husband, Hinton Good; sons, Anthony, Charles and Thomas Good, daughters, Charity, Frances and Martha Good; parents, Robert and Charity Lawson; sister, Elizabeth (John) Carey; brothers, Thomas Lawson and Woodson Williams; and nieces, Margaret and Julia Carey. It is assumed Mary is buried in the Gist Settlement Cemetery. Thomas died shortly after Mary in the 1850s. The remaining children were divided with Anthony, Charles and Frances staying with Hinton and Charity and Martha being raised by their grandparents, Robert and Charity Lawson.

    Robert Lawson
Birth: 1804 Hanover County, Virginia, USA
Death: 4 Nov 1876 (aged 71–72) Highland County, Ohio, USA
Burial: Gist Settlement Cemetery, Gist Settlement, Highland County, Ohio, USA
    Memorial #: 174251733
Bio: Robert Lawson was born in captivity in or around 1804 in Hanover County, Virginia. As with most colored persons in America that were held in bondage, the identity of Robert’s parents, or the origin of his surname, are unknown. Robert was a slave of English landowner Samuel Gist and worked the land of Gist’s plantation located in Hanover County, immediately Northwest of Richmond, Virginia. Robert was one of approximately 350 slaves or more that worked the land of Gist’s Virginia estate. (Gist reportedly never even set foot on American soil.)In 1815, when Robert was around 11, Samuel Gist died in London, England. Upon his death, and in accordance with Gist’s last will and testament, dated 1808, all of Gist’s slaves were granted manumission. Also, per a provision of Gist’s will, the newly freed slaves were to be provided with land in the North (i.e., Ohio). However, due to shady misdealings and appropriations on the part of executors of Gists assets and estate, all of Gist’s former slaves would not be able to claim their newly appointed land for another two decades. During this time, Robert stayed in Virginia. It is assumed that Robert, as did many of the Gist slaves, continued to reside on the decedent Gist’s plantation. At the turn of the 1820s, Robert married a fellow former Gist slave named Charity (maiden name unknown). Over the next decade, Robert and Charity had at least three children together; two daughters, Mary Ann (born c. 1824) and Elizabeth Ann (born c. 1825), and son Thomas (born c. 1832). Also during the late 1830s, the Lawsons adopted Woodson Williams. Woodson went on to serve in the Civil War and died in 1909, age 73.Settlements for the former Gist slaves were already plotted out and becoming vacated by some freed slaves in parts of Brown County, Ohio beginning in 1819. However, for reasons unknown, Robert stayed in Virginia (perhaps because of his age, he would’ve only been 15 at the time). Between 1831 and 1835, agents of the Gist estate began settling land in Northwestern Highland County, Ohio, approximately 3 miles east of New Vienna. With this new land laid out, preparations were made to transport the remaining Gist slaves in Virginia to this property, which became known as ‘Gist Settlements’.With no money set aside to provide transportation for the residents, (the remaining money acquired from the estate was stolen by Gist’s appointed executors), the former slaves had to travel by foot to their new community. Robert, and his wife and children walked some 480 miles from the Gist Plantation near Richmond, VA to the newly settled Gist Settlement near New Vienna, Ohio in 1835. Among the Lawson were around 20 other families; including the family of Rosanna Good, whose son Hinton went on to marry Mary Ann, and the family of Nancy Carey, which included John Carey, who married Elizabeth Ann, and Eliza Price, who married Thomas. The settlement was laid out to have about 22 lots of land and property for the families, as well as a church, cemetery, and school. Robert became a schoolteacher in the newly built Carthagenia School where he gave a formal education to the children and grandchildren of the former Gist slaves. This is a position Robert held for several decades. On November 4, 1876, Robert Lawson died at his home on the settlement due inflammatory bowels. He was 72 years old. Robert was survived by his wife Charity, daughter Elizabeth (John) Carey, sons Thomas (Eliza) Lawson and Woodson Williams, son-in-law Hinton Good, the granddaughters he raised, Charity (Harrison) Pearl and Martha (John) Woods, as well as 17 other grandchildren, and about 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Mary Good, grandson Thomas Good, granddaughters Frances Powers and Julia Turner, great-grandson Enos Rollins and an infant great-grandson.———————————————————————per Ohio, County Death Records, 1840-2001Record of Deaths, Probate Court,Highland County, Ohio, 1877Full name: Robert LawsonDate of death: Nov. 4, 1876Condition: MarriedAge: 72Place of death: Penn Twp.
