Cause of Death[4] Burned In A Fire

Mary Lillian supposedly died in a fire in 1898, when Thomas Lacy was only 4. Based on the story told by Judy Smith, it appears that William Lacy Phelps’ life took a dramatic turn at this point, with financial trouble that eventually estranged him from his family. Recent research has found that she instead died in 1896, when Thomas was only about 4 months old, not four years.

From her Obituary: 24 Oct 1896 (Issue date) Mrs. W. L. PHELPS died last Sunday evening; buried Monday at St. Napoleon; her sister Mrs. Walter CROUCH of New Orleans attended the funeral. She was badly burned when her dress caught fire.,
