Latest research, as of 7 Oct 1998, shows that the Virginia birthplace shown in Judith Smith’s notes is incorrect. The 1860 census records show a North Carolina birthplace for Joseph and his wife. There may still be a Virginia connection farther up the line, as the Haughtons were prominent in Warwick County, VA, not that far away from the NC counties showing Haughton residents.

The Haughton family has strong presence in the area around Chowan County, NC. Records from this area are fairly good. A will shows a reference to Joseph Haughton as a grandchild to Jonathan Haughton. While there appears to have been two Joseph Haughtons in this area, for now I will carry Joseph B. Haughton as the one mentioned in the will.

Middle name = Beasley??

The baptismal records for Mary Lillian put this family in Assumption Parish in 1860, but by census time, they were in Orleans parish.
