There is a possibility that Mary Polly had been previously married. I have not seen record of that, but Matella P. Doughman says that Stephen married Mrs. Mary B. Bennett.

In a later supplement Mrs. Doughman gives more info on this Mary: "She was a granddaughter of Jesse Gould and married first to Benedict Bennett. Their chilren were Smith, who died young and Elizabeth who married Emery Long. Had five children: Anna, Elva, Izola and Harry - one died in infancy. After death of Benedict B. she married Stephen Jackson for his second wife. Elva is now Mrs. Tucker of Ironton, Ohio."

The problem I find with the above is the 1880 census record of Emery Long and his wife Mary E. This children are listed as Anna Alva, Izola and Harry; so this is the right couple. But Mary E. is listed as 24 years old with calculated birth date of about 1856. And her mother, Mary Polly /MNU/ Bennett, married Stephen Jackson in 1849. The only way I can see that this paragraph above could be right is that if Elizabeth had died and Mary E. was a second wife to Emery. But the 1870 census proves this wrong. Looks like this Mary E. is NOT Elizabeth, dau of Mary Polly Bennett and Mary E. is the mother of Anna. Needs more work to prove second paragraph above.
