Andrew was found in the 1860 Warren Co, OH census living with his father, Stephen Jackson and his new step-mother, Susannah Scudder Flesher Jackson. Andrew and two brothers, Benjamin and Albert are listed on the 1860 census as having a last name of Flesher so at first it was thought that these were Susanna's children. But extensive census work by both this webmaster and Paula Mellor has convinced us that this was a census taker's error. On later census records these three children were given their proper last name of Jackson. Below are some of the reasons I first questioned the lineage:

A puzzlement to this webmaster - Benjamin, Albert and Andrew are old enough to show on a census first in 1860. They are listed in the household of Stephen and Susanna Scudder Flesher Jackson. But after Susanna's first husband, Elias, died, his oldest 4 children were placed under guardianship as they were minors. (Elias had died) Why were not the younger 3 children also placed under guardianship?? And the birthdate of Andrew presents a problem. Could the younger three children have been nephews Susanna was raising; and perhaps someone else was their guardian?? I note also that these 3 younger children were not with Susan on the 1870 census. I notice too that when the older children received an inheritance from their grandfather Alfred Scudder, these 3 boys were not included in that inheritance. So I began to doubt that they were Susanna's children.

Paula Mellor provided the info below: Warren CO.. Ohio Box 50 thru Box 100 Will & Estate Records, (Cardinal Research 1 May 1995), Pg. 56. Jackson, Stephen (E) Box 133 - DE 3 (. 254 - 21 Oct 1865 ADMR: Susan Jackson WIDOW: Susan Jackson HEIRS: dau Serena Simonton, minor son Benjamin Jackson, minor son Albert Jackson, minor son Andrew Jackson, minor dau Elvira Jackson. Note: Casander Jackson an older son of Stephen died 12 yrs ago leaving four surving children not named. Information from MB 4 p. 76 & WRB - 19 - p. 361

In the 1900 Highland Co, OH Census, Susanna states that she has had 5 children; so that would not have included Benjamin, Albert and Andrew. So the papers of administration show these 3 boys were Jackson children and that the census naming them Flesher was in error.

Andrew Jackson is found, 16 years old, in the 1870 Census living with his father's brother, Andrew Jackson and his wife Sarah Ross. Andrew's father, Sephen had died 5 years earlier and his mother prior to that. His Uncle Andrew and Aunt Sarah have raised several of their neices and nephews.

Andrew is found in the 1880 census living with his father's brother, Benjamin Basil Jackson Sr. Note that he states his Mother was born in Maine which coincides with the 1860 census; Stephen's new wife Mary Polly Bennett states she was born in Maine.
