Mary Everitt was baptised on 29th October 1786 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Everitt, formerly Cannon, and her husband George Everitt, a labourer. Mary's father died in 1800, when Mary was thirteen years old.

On 4th August 1804, aged 17, Mary married William Piggott at Hitchin. He was from the small town of Stevenage, about five miles to the south-east of Hitchin. Mary and William had their first son baptised at Hitchin in 1806, before settling in Stevenage where they had another eight children baptised between 1807 and 1829. All the children's baptisms after 1817 record that the family lived at Letchmore Green in Stevenage. William was also recorded as being a labourer.

William died at Stevenage on 29th August 1840, aged 56. Mary appears in the 1841 census living at Letchmore Green with her youngest son, Benjamin.

By 1851 Mary and Benjamin were living on Back Lane in Stevenage. Benjamin was by this time working as a railway labourer, presumably for the Great Northern Railway, whose line from London to Peterborough had opened the previous year, with a station at Stevenage. Mary was still living with Benjamin in the 1861 census, by which time he had married and had children.

Mary died at Stevenage on 1st July 1861, aged 74.
