Parentage
Some researchers have placed Mary's maiden name as Barkley since that is the name listed on her Marriage Certificate [listed as "M.S. Barkley"] to Elmer E. Markham 1902 in Simpson County, Kentucky [Kentucky, County Marriage Records, 1783-1965]. A key piece of evidence proving her as an "Estes" is one of the witnesses listed on the Marriage Certificate: "Neely Estes". This is James Neely Estes (1879-1959), son of William Andrew Estes and Ella Akin, and James Neely Estes was the older sibling of Mary Estes. And the second witness to the Marriage Certificate is listed as M.E. Gibbs, who is the MOTHER of Mary Estes, who had re-married in 1886 to Joseph Gibbs [source: 1900 U.S. Census Record]. The marriage also took place at the residence of her mother in Simpson County, Kentucky per the Marriage Certificate, shown below:
In addition to this evidence, two other official records list Mary as "Mary Estes":
- 1) The 1910 U.S. Census lists Mary Markham as having a prior marriage, supporting the marriage certificate as Mary having a likely prior marriage to a "Tom Barkley", as listed in the Marriage Records of Mary's daughter Mammie Ellen Barkley/Markham, who was born 25 Oct 1896 in Kentucky. - 2) Mary is also clearly listed as "Mary Estes" on the Certificate of Death of her daughter Ruth, and in the Marriage record of her son Paul Blackburn Markham.
Also, Mary is listed as "Mary Sanford Markham" in the Marriage Records of her daughter Mammie Ellen Barkley, born 1896. She was the daughter of Mary and her [possible] first husband, Tom Barkley. [Indiana, Select Marriages Index, 1748-1993]
Based upon her listing of "M.S. Barkley" on her Marriage Certificate, Mary had a very short marriage to a "Tom Barkley" who likely died [or ended in divorce] prior to her marriage to Elmer Markham. [per her Find-A-Grave page].

Mary's maiden name seemed somewhat of a mystery because her children's death certificates give a variety of maiden names for her: Beulah, Ruby, and Ruth's show Estes, Zula's shows Sanford, and Paul's shows Gibbs.
Find A Grave contributor Delijim reports that Mary was the daughter of William Andrew Estes & Ella Akin.
Sanford was her middle name, so that resolves that potential maiden name. After her father's death, her mother married a Gibbs, so that is how the Gibbs surname was erroneously attributed to Mary.

(2) Elmer E. Markham on 2 Feb 1902 in Simpson Co., KY.
Mary's obituary in the "Indianapolis Star" included: ". . .mother of Mrs. Chester Sprinkles, Mrs. Robert Wright, Mrs. Thomas Lambert, Mrs. Cecil Kepler and Paul Markham. . ."
Mrs. Chester Sprinkles = Zula; Mrs. Robert Wright = Mamie Ellen; Mrs. Thomas Lambert = Beulah; Mrs. Cecil Kepler = Eula Mae. Note that Mamie Ellen is the daughter of Mary and Tom Barkley. The other children are Mary and Elmer Markham's.
According to her obituary, Mary died at the Indianapolis home of her daughter, Mrs. Chester Sprinkles.
