[edit] NotesThe Kentucky marriage record of Elmer Markham and Mary Estes lists Mary as "M.S. Barkley", indicating a possible prior marriage to a Mr. Barkley [needs additional research]. Because of this, some researchers have placed Mary as a Barkley instead of Estes, but a key piece of circumstantial evidence contained on the Marriage Certificate is one of the witnesses, "Neely Estes" [James Neely Estes (1879-1959)], who is likely the older sibling of Mary. It certainly makes sense for James as an older sibling to witness his younger sister's Marriage Certificate, especially given that their father, William Andrew Estes had died 5 December 1884 in Simpson County, Kentucky. And the second witness to the Marriage Certificate is listed as M.E. Gibbs, who is the MOTHER of Mary Estes, who had re-married in 1886 to Joseph Gibbs [source: 1900 U.S. Census Record].
