Mary Arnold's origins have yet to be established. The age quoted for her when she died implies that she was born around 1773, and in the 1841 census she said she was born in Hertfordshire. Her first confirmed sighting is on 1st May 1804 at St Albans in Hertfordshire, when she was married to a labourer named Thomas King at St Michael's Church on the western side of the town. Both Mary and Thomas marked the marriage register rather than signing it.

Mary and Thomas had a son named William baptised the following year at the Abbey Church in the centre of St Albans. Just over two years later they had a daughter named Hannah baptised at St Peter's Church on the northern edge of St Albans. Therefore in the space of just over four years the family had appeared in three separate churches in St Albans. Perhaps they moved about within the town.

Some time between summer 1807 and autumn 1808 the family left St Albans and moved about eleven miles to the north, to Caddington, a large parish straddling the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire border near the town of Luton. At Caddington they had three more children: James in 1808, John in 1812 and Mary in 1814. Mary's baptism records that the family lived at Tipple Hill, which is a lane in the Aley Green area in the part of the parish which at that time was in Hertfordshire.

On 5th January 1826 Mary's husband Thomas and eldest son William were both buried at Caddington; perhaps there had been an illness in the family. Mary and Thomas had been married for nearly 22 years. Eighteen months later Mary's daughter Hannah died aged 20.

In 1830 Mary's son James married a Susan Dean. Mary's first grandchild was born the following year.

In 1833 Mary's daughter, Mary, had a son named William. In 1839 Mary's daughter Mary died, and young William was left being looked after by his grandmother. Mary had therefore outlived three of her five children; only her sons James and John were still living. They both worked as agricultural labourers.

The 1841 census find Mary living with her orphaned grandson William, her unmarried son John and her son James and his wife and their five children all living in one house at Aley Green in the Hertfordshire part of Caddington parish. Mary was described as a straw plaiter, a common local occupation supporting the hat industry centred on the nearby town of Luton.

In 1842 Mary's son John married a widow named Susannah Moss, who had one surviving son from her first marriage. John and Susannah did not have any further children. Mary's other son James and his wife Susan had eight children in total, all born in Mary's lifetime, but two of them died young.

Mary died in 1850, being buried at Caddington on 21st April 1850. She had been a widow for 24 years. She was said to be 76 when she died.
