John King was baptised on 9th August 1812 at Caddington in Bedfordshire, son of a straw plaiter named Mary King, formerly Arnold, and her husband Thomas King, a labourer. He was the fourth of the couple's five children. Early in 1826, when John was thirteen, both his father and eldest brother William died. Less than eighteen months later his elder sister Hannah also died. John and his surviving siblings James and Mary continued to live at Caddington with their mother. His younger sister Mary had a son named William Fensome King in 1833, but then Mary died in 1839, leaving six year old William to be brought up by his grandmother. The 1841 census finds John living at Aley Green in Caddington with his mother and nephew William, in the same house as his brother James and his growing family. The whole King family of Caddington was therefore living in the same house at this point.
On 18th November 1842, aged 30, John was married to a 28 year old widow named Susannah Moss, formerly Puddephatt. At the time of their marriage both were described as living at Tipple Hill, which lies near the hamlet of Aley Green in Caddington parish. Susannah's first husband, James Moss, had died the previous year aged just 23, leaving Susannah with two small children, William and Elizabeth. Elizabeth had died aged one a few months after her father. Therefore by the time John King married Susannah she only had one surviving son, five year old William Moss, who became John's stepson. In 1850, John's mother Mary died aged 76 and was buried at Caddington.
John and Susannah do not appear to have had any children together. The 1851 census finds John working as a farm labourer and living with Susannah, her son William Moss and John's nephew Edward King, who was John's brother James's son. In 1858 William Moss was married to a Catherine Warren, and the 1861 census finds John and Susannah living at Tipple Hill, next door to William, Catherine and their two small children. Catherine died in 1864, after which William married again, with his second wife being John's niece Bethia King.
At the time of the 1871 census, Susannah was working away from home as a domestic servant at Zouches Farm on the hills to the north of Caddington. John was still living at Aley Green with a twelve year old Elizabeth King. She is described as his daughter, but was probably John's stepson William Moss's daughter.
John died in 1875, aged 62, being buried at Caddington on 18th March 1875. Susannah outlived him by over 21 years.
