BY GEORGE PIERCE, SON OF LEONARD PIERCE, GRANDSON OF MARTIN RILEY PIERCE.

Grandad Pierce was a very large man; tall, slim, broad shouldered and gave the appearance of very masculine strength. Every time you looked at him he always had the ability to see through you. You felt like when you were around that you could never lie to him or try to put anything over on him because he would almost know it before you did. He was of a very strong character. He didn’t need to give you a lickin. About all you had to do is look at him and you knew you had done something wrong. Those stealy eyes of his could go back to the kindness of the smallest child and it used to give me great pleasure to see that in his eyes. This kindness that almost told you he approved of what you did or how you acted.

Grandmother (Harriet Peterson Pierce, Grammie T’s mother) Was the opposite of Grandad. Just to look at her told you she was gentle and kind and very understanding about anything. You would just run to her with your problems. They were two of the finest people that anyone ever could imagine. As far as I was concerned I was highly honored for the time I spent with my dear Grandfather and Grandmother. The talks we had together, the wisdom they handed down to me has carried throughout my life and guided me. Many times, the decision that I have had to make started from the wisdom my Grand parents gave to me years ago.

I remember Grandad and Grandmother had one small ground hog as a pet. I will never forget how they had trained that little pet. They got it while a baby. A bank had broken off a muddy bank and got this baby then. They fed and raised it on a bottle.

There seemed to be an understanding that existed between my Grandparents and that ground hog. I know they must have had a lot of happy hours with that little creature. This little fellow stayed around until he was an adult and finally got a family of his own. He moved them close to the back yard and he had his own little mound where he stayed. Grandad talked to him like you would talk to a human and I think the animal understood Grandad sometimes to the letter. The ground hog tried to move his family into my grandparents house. Grandad drew the line. The little pet would come in the house just like he owned the place and would line up his little family outside, but wouldn’t let them come in. It was impressive the discipline that Grandad could possess over a little creature. It made me think of the greatness he must have had over his children. They all grew to be wonderful people.”

Just a few quick thoughts. My mother was a true Saint. I have never known anyone more patient, wise by example, charitable and just plain happy. I loved my papa, my pal, confidant and provider. Our big family of twelve was a close family. We weren't close in distance, but in love. I have never known any two who were at odds. We worked, loved, kissed, sang, and cried through life. We always kept in touch.
Our own precious children, grand children and great grand children are a part of every fiber in our being. Our whole souls need them, are concerned about them and feel great joy in them. We are bound together in eternal love. Nothing hurtful on the outside can endure for long.
OUR FATHER, WE NEED, LOVE AND THANK THEE.
