According to family bible, Martha died of cancer The Shelbyville Republican Friday October 1, 1926 DEATH OCCURS AT HOSPITAL MISS MATTIE MEEKS DIED THIS MORNING FOLLOWING FIVE WEEKS' ILLNESS WAS WELL KNOWN HERE Miss Mattie Meeks died at the Major hospital shortly after ten o'clock this morning following an illness of five weeks. She had been in the hospital during that entire period. Death was due to a complication of diseases. Miss Meeks was 72 years old. She was born in Shelby county December 8, 1854, the daughter of Nancy and Jacob Meiks. She was the ninth child in a family of twelve, only two of whom survive. The surviving sister is Mrs. J. W. Yarling, of this city, and the brother is Thomas Edward Meiks, of Indianapolis. Several nephews also survive. They are George Meiks and Scot Meiks, of Shelbyville, and John Meiks, of Marion township. The deceased had made her home with Mr. And Mrs. John Yarling for about ten years. She was a faithful member of the First M. E. church here and had always taken a very active part in church affairs. Funeral arrangements, which are in charge of Ralph Edwards, have not yet been completed.
